Respecting Elders around the World

Respecting our elders is a value that crosses cultures and borders. Here's a look at how different countries around the world honour their elderly citizens.

Korea

In Korea, the 60th and 70th birthdays are major celebrations. These milestone birthdays are marked with large gatherings of family and friends, recognizing the wisdom and experience that comes with age.

Japan

“Respect for the Aged Day” is celebrated every 3rd Monday of September. Communities organize free lunches, ceremonies, and special events to honour their senior citizens.

China

China has gone so far as to create an Elderly Rights Law that requires children to visit their parents regularly. Those who don't comply can face fines or even jail time. This legislation reflects the deep cultural importance of filial piety in Chinese society.

Scotland

Scotland has been reforming its elderly care system, creating accommodations for seniors to stay in their own homes with in-home care support. This approach recognizes that elders are most comfortable and dignified in their own surroundings.
